A suit. |
Suits are rarely worn in Singapore except for important functions like dinners and weddings, or if you are a lawyer attending a court case.
For me, I like suits, and would not mind if even if I have to wear them everyday, although their high prices make them rather prohibitive for such a situation to be fulfilled.
I think businessmen in Singapore should wear suits. Sure, the weather here is warm; I don't like it either, but what you can do is simply remove the jacket once you are outside, and then wear it again when you are inside an air-conditioned office. Offices nowadays are getting increasingly colder, so the suit jacket could be an added bonus not just for appearance but or warmth.

Weather, however, is only part of the problems equation. Price is another factor, and could be the one playing the bigger role. The high prices of suits make them prohibitive, especially if you choose a good one. Having several sets of them would barely be feasible.
Suits are sometimes worn with another article of clothing called the waistcoat, or as it is more commonly known, the vest. A suit that has a vest included is called a three-piece suit (the jacket plus the pants in addition to the jacket.). Personally, I like this look, and makes the appearance even sharper and more complete.
Some will say a vest will make you look old or it is passé. I agree partially with this, since vests are worn more often in the 70s and 80s. However, I think if the vest and suit are made with a modern cut, it can be updated and dispel any comments of your ensemble resembling something an apek might wear.
For myself, I would prefer the jacket be unfastened should a vest be worn. Fastening the jacket will only serve to cover the vest, which wouldn't do the vest much good.
Besides, the vest will keep the tie in, especially during windy times, and make you still as sharp even when your jacket is removed. And... for those who cannot tie a proper-length tie, the vest can cover the tie. So, even if your tie is reaches only your chest in length, nobody can tell! ;)
